Identify the complete pattern
Count the holes used by the spout, controls and any accessories. Decorative covers can conceal openings, so inspect below the basin where possible. An installed faucet's outer silhouette may not reveal the true mounting pattern.
Measure center to center
Record the distance between the mounting-hole centers using the reference points required by the new product drawing. If trim covers the holes, ask the installer to identify the centers rather than measuring between handle tips. Also record hole diameter and mounting thickness.
Compare the exact configuration
A product family can include different mounting arrangements, so use the selected model and option. Check whether spacing is fixed or adjustable and confirm the allowed range if applicable. A familiar label such as widespread is not a substitute for the actual dimensions.
Check the space beneath and around
Supply connections and mounting hardware need room below the deck. Above it, handles must move without hitting the backsplash or mirror. Before drilling a new countertop, have the installer confirm the chosen basin, faucet and drawing together. Do not use a product photograph as a drilling template.
A common question.
Can I measure the distance between handle tips?
That is not a reliable hole-spacing measurement. Handle shape and orientation can extend beyond the mounting centers.
