What an exposed system changes

An exposed shower places more of its assembly in view: the riser, controls and connections become part of the room's design. This can suit a classic bathroom, but the visible arrangement still needs a precise fit. Confirm inlet spacing, mounting support and the actual connection requirements rather than assuming exposed means universal replacement.

What a built-in system changes

A built-in layout conceals more plumbing behind the finished wall. The visible outlets and controls can feel visually quieter, but valves, rough-in depth and component compatibility become early decisions. Choose the system before completing the wall and understand how it will be serviced.

Compare your renovation constraints

If you are replacing an existing installation, document the current supplies and wall conditions. If the room is being rebuilt, compare both approaches before fixing the outlet positions. Neither type is automatically easier or less expensive in every project. Ask the installer to assess the actual work rather than choosing from the appearance alone.

Confirm the complete configuration

List the outlets you need: fixed head, hand shower and tub filler where appropriate. Confirm how they are controlled and whether the selected system includes the required valves and installation components. Similar finishes do not make unrelated trim and rough-in parts interchangeable.

A common question.

Is an exposed system always a simple retrofit?

No. Inlet spacing, connections, support and wall conditions still need to suit the selected assembly.

Take the next step.

Use the shower system buying guide to put this decision into the wider room plan. Then compare shower systems using the exact selected configuration and current product information.
